Watch out for your neighbors and make a difference!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REPORT
Meeting took place from 7-9PM Monday, February 2nd 2009
with full capacity in the Great Room at Tuscany Recreation Center.

Victim Ken Howard recounted his recent
HOME INVASION AT GUNPOINT.
This shocking story stunned the listeners with the telling details being related first-hand by the victim, himself. The emotions were real and recent. Everyone was in horror as they listened how the Howard family survived a life-threatening 3-hour ordeal.
Henderson PD gave a no-nonsense approach to make your Tuscany lifestyle SAFER way to live. This is just a start. The awareness has begun and now steps will be taken. Stay tuned in to your block watch.

ATTENTION ALL TUSCANY RESIDENTS CONCERNED WITH NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY:

This is Debra Stefan, your Neighborhood Watch coordinator and neighbor.

Attached are the official Neighborhood Watch information sheets that are the tools to make you and your neighbors safer. It is all VOLUNTARY and you can choose the level of involvement that makes you the most comfortable.

An interview with a seasoned "career" home robber revealed that the biggest deterrent to his work was NOSEY NEIGHBORS!

Read this first, print it out and share with your closest neighbors.

FIND YOUR BLOCK
The way the Neighborhood Watch program works is that you first take the BLOCK MAP and by following the example diagram, you can outline the homes closest to you. You can click on the link above and enlarge your corresponding map showing all home lots. This can give you something to work with when making up your personal block grid. Block Captains wishing to REGISTER YOUR BLOCK make sure and print out your map and define your block on the grid sheet. You will need to turn this in for your registration with Henderson P.D. Then you will receive your sign and your block information will be added to the local police computer database that comes up on their scanners. You will be then notified of crime alerts directly so you can contact your phone tree!

Then you make a commitment to yourself and your neighbors to be on the lookout for suspicious activities. Many of us have been trained to "mind your own business". Essentially, you and your nearest neighbors are to become one big extended family and you ARE minding your business when you become concerned enough to act by reporting any and all suspicious activity.

Next, you decide to trust your neighbors because you have all agreed to watch out for one another. Then you share your family profile information with them (regarding vehicles and people authorized at the home and what usual times) so that they can easily recognize when something does not fit a normal pattern. Many times, in broad daylight entire households have been loaded into moving trucks and stolen under the pretense of moving. Neighbors who do not know one another would assume that the neighbors they never got to know are moving out! Believe it or not, this is a real mode of operation in neighborhoods where people come and go about their business without getting to know their neighbors. Kinda sad, isn't it?

FAMILY PROFILE

Download Data Summary Sheet

Okay, that brings us to the attached "data_sheet" where you will want to fill out your FAMILY PROFILE. This data will prove valuable in emergencies and allow us to say, "We Watch Out For each Other!" Each neighbor AND NO ONE ELSE, will receive a copy of the completed sheets for their use. Participation is VOLUNTARY. Provide only the information you are comfortable sharing and return it to your block captain. Who will be the block captain for you? Maybe you will choose to be the captain for your block. You and your nearest neighbors can determine that among yourselves based on who is home the most. Many homeowners are not full-time residents. I have received an abundance of requests from these "Part-time Residents" who would very much appreciate being included for obvious reasons.

PHONE TREE
Download Phone Tree
Lastly, you have your PHONE TREE sheet, which you will want to have readily available in case of an alert. Set this up by having willing participants put their names and numbers in the spaces. Each household gets a copy of the completed form to have on hand. This phone tree is used for quick communication with all your neighbors. Every household is assigned a few names/numbers to call and a short message, which needs to be passed on. When someone on the block has info to be shared, they call the name at the top of the list. That person in turn calls the ones listed directly below them and passes on the message ... and so on. You can get the habit of using this procedure anytime you want to reach everyone on the list--even for a potluck dinner!

HOME INVENTORY (not shared)

As an additional aid for your personal household use, you will find it helpful to have a completed "Home Inventory". This is always good to have for insurance purposes and for recovery if items are stolen. Engrave as many of your valuables including electronics with your driver's license number (tip from Henderson PD). They have unclaimed goods in evidence that no one can identify because they did not engrave them. Take pictures and engrave your possessions.

UNITE YOUR BLOCK
On Via Colmo, we have taken it a step further by sharing email addresses as well. Obviously, this if only for non-alert communications, but it serves as an additional line of communication to unite the block. You can inform the others that you will be away and ask for your newspapers to be taken in, etc. Also, when we recently had new neighbors move in we were able to share the news to our watch block and plan to get together. Being welcomed into the watch group is an added amenity to living here. Our sales department will do well to use this as a selling point in order to help us meet our occupancy goals sooner than later. We are all concerned about the value of our properties and Neighborhood Watch makes our community safer and therefore a more desirable place to live--all because of your decision to be involved!

Please print out the attached worksheets to get your Block Watch campaign started a.s.a.p. Just so you know, National Neighborhood Watch Institute gives permission to copy these sheets for distribution within a neighborhood watch group.

Thanks for caring; feel free to contact me should you need more help getting started.
